The Goddess Selene is the Full Moon aspect of the Greek Triple Goddess.  The others being Artemis - Waxing Moon and Hecate - the Waning Moon. In the maiden, mother, crone aspects of the Goddess, Selene is the mother Goddess, Artemis the maiden and Hecate the Crone.

Selene is depicted as a beautiful winged goddess who wears a golden crown that radiates gentle light.  She is known for her various love affairs, with Zeus, she is the mother of Pandia meaning 'All-bright' and Ersa meaning 'Dew'.  With Pan who gave her a herd of white oxen.  Pan accomplished the seduction of Selene by disguising his hairy black goatishness with white fleece. Selene consented to ride on his back, unaware of who he was, and Pan proceeded to ravish her.

But most famously known for her love affair with Endymion.  Endymion was the mortal prince, who was given immortality and eternal youth by Zeus on the condition that he be eternally asleep, though some say Selene Herself requested that he be always asleep, so that no other might have him. She would visit him faithfully every night, and it is said that She had 50 daughters by him.  Some also say She was mother of the Nemean Lion, whom Hercules killed.

Selene Ritual
You will need:
Two white candles
A bell
Moon water
Your chalice (or cup)

Between the night, Hidden from sight, I conjure a circle of mystic light. By the earth that is her body. And by the air that is her breath. And by the fire of her bright star. And the waters of her womb, The circle is cast and we are between worlds Beyond the bounds of time Where night and day Birth and death Joy and sorrow Meet as one. Blessed be.

Stand before the altar facing North and say:
This is the time of the full moon, a time of great power for positive manifestation, a time of increasing and gaining.  The tide of Moon-power is strong.
I am of the Goddess.   I stand before You at Your altar, in love and adoration.
Be with me Goddess.   Let me feel your presence here tonight."

Go to the east with the bell.
Ring it once and say:
"Hail Selene. Help me feel the Lady's power and presence within my mind."

Go to the South.
Ring the bell once and say:
"Hail Selene.   Help me feel the Lady's power and presence within my spirit."

Go to the West.
Ring the bell once and say:
"Hail Selene.  Help me feel the Lady's power and presence within my emotions."

Go back to the North.
Ring the bell once and say:
"Hail Selene.  Help me feel the Lady's power and presence in my body."
Return the bell to the altar, turn to the North, and raise your arms high above your head.
Say:
"Hail Goddess! Moon Mother, Lady of Light, Mistress of Magick and Marriage.
You are the white light of the Moon upon the Earth, the brilliant rays of sun upon life.
You are the beginning and ending, the One who creates and takes away.
Within You, I see myself and all woman.
In this time, You come to me and fill me with your presence."
Communicate with Her now. Tell Her your problems, wishes and anything you wish to tell her.
When you are finished say:
All honor and love to the wonderful Goddess, for She is the power behind all powers,
the Goddess behind all gods,  the Eternal Life behind death.
I see Her loving face within the moon and rejoice.
All Hail Queen of the heavens and the earth, the eternal on of Wisdom!"
Raise the chalice to toast her and say:
To Selene and all the Goddesses!"

The circle is open but unbroken
May the peace of the Goddess be ever in your heart
Merry Meet, and merry part and merry meet again.
Blessed Be!

"From her immortal head a radiance is shown from heaven and embraces earth; and great is the beauty that ariseth from her shining light. The air, unlit before, glows with the light of her golden crown, and her rays beam clear, whensoever bright Selene having bathed her lovely body in the waters of Ocean, and donned her far-gleaming raiment, and yoked her strong-necked, shining team, drives on her long-maned horses at full speed, at eventime in the mid-month: then her great orbit is full and then her beams shine brightest as she increases. So she is a sure token and a sign to mortal men."
Homeric Hymns, edited by Hugh G. Evelyn-White

"Three nights remained before Luna's [Selene the Moon's] bright horns would meet and form her orb; then when she shone in fullest radiance and with form complete gazed down upon the sleeping lands below, [the witch] Medea, barefoot, her long robe unfastened, her hair upon her shoulders falling loose, went forth alone upon her roaming way, in the deep stillness of the midnight hour [to make her magics]." - Ovid, Metamorphoses 7.179

Lore: Selenite, named for the ancient Moon Goddess Selene, provides for mental clarity. Like a sharp sword of awareness, it cuts through unconscious assumptions about ourselves and our surroundings. Lovers can trade selenite crystals to help reconcile differences. Selenite activates the aspect of our nature that is true spiritual feeling.

Geology: Selenite, a crystallized form of gypsum, is a hydrous calcium sulfate. It is one of the first minerals formed by evaporating salt water in land locked bodies isolated from the open ocean.

Localities: Chihuahua, Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas
